Hugh Cowan was born a 1700 at County Down, Ireland.1,2 He was the son of (?) Cowan. He married Ann Matthias on 20 Jan 1723.3 He married Mary Scott b 1741.4 Hugh Cowan died in early 1781.5
Hugh immigrated to Pennsylvania a 1720.2 He built his home in Sadsbury Township, Chester Co., PA. He was an Elder of the Octoraro Presbyterian Church.6,7 He sold property to James Cowan on 7 Nov 1748 at Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The deed identified James as Hugh Cowan's oldest son:
"THIS INDENTURE made the 7th day of November in the year of our Lord 1748 between Hugh Cowan of Sadsbury Township in the County of Chester Yeoman of the one part and james Cowan of the same place, Wheelwright, the eldest son and Heir at law of him the said Hugh Cowan of the other part". [Chester County, PA Deed Book R, p. 513.].8 In James Cowan's will on 29 Sep 1751 Hugh were named as heirs.9,10 He made a will on 20 Jul 1776 at Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The will provided as follows:
"Cowan, Hugh. Sadsbury.
Will dated July 20, 1776. Probated 17 Jan 1782 4.
Son Matthias to be exempted from payment of a bond of £15. To son Davis £20. Remaining 1/3 to wife Mary and 2/3 to 2 daughters Ann and Hannah. Executors: Sons-in-law Robert Cowan and David Park. Witnesses: Charles Kinkead, Joseph Cowan. Annotation - Inventory: Jan. 15, 1782 by Arthur Park and Joseph Park, £146:5. Accounts show £640.1.9. Widow received £61:0:6, Ann £53:7:2, Hannah £46:12:9.".11,12
